Me on my period trying to explain that I am completely fine while experiencing seventeen different emotions in the same five minutes. The Vampire Diaries Season 1, Episode 19, “Miss Mystic Falls” (2010), accidentally gave us the perfect visual representation. Stefan Salvatore is already struggling with his renewed craving for human blood when he finds himself alone with Amber Bradley, played by Spencer Locke. She looks at him and thinks he seems sad. Stefan, played by Paul Wesley, immediately corrects her. He is not sad. He is hungry. Very hungry. Then Amber asks if he wants to hurt her, and Stefan calmly admits that his thoughts have gone significantly further than that. The emotional range is honestly impressive. Sad? No. Hungry? Absolutely. Irritated? Increasingly. Ready to make a completely unreasonable decision because everything suddenly feels ten times more intense? We have arrived. What makes the scene so memorable beyond the meme is Paul Wesley’s performance. Stefan spends so much of The Vampire Diaries desperately trying to be the controlled, compassionate Salvatore brother. Here, you can practically watch that control slipping away while he keeps trying to convince himself he still has it. Directed by Marcos Siega, “Miss Mystic Falls” also takes place during the Founder’s Day Gala, where Elena and Caroline compete in the Miss Mystic Falls pageant while Stefan’s private struggle becomes increasingly difficult to hide. It is a must-see early Vampire Diaries episode because the polished Mystic Falls setting contrasts perfectly with the chaos happening inside Stefan. And taken completely out of context, it is also one of the most relatable mood swings ever put on television. Me: I am not emotional. Also me five minutes later: I am not sad. I am hungry. And everyone should probably give me some space. Save this for the next time your emotions decide to become the main character, or share it with the friend who knows exactly which phase you are currently in.

Opening night at the Met. There is nothing like it — one of the most glamorous evenings on the New York social calendar. Last week, after the premiere of the Met’s thrilling new production of Verdi’s MACBETH, nearly 750 guests crossed the plaza from the opera house to David Geffen Hall for dinner. In this production, Malcolm’s advancing army marches on the castle camouflaged with tree branches — a forest come to life. We took that as our cue. We hung grand tapestries of trees in the floor-to-ceiling windows, rising high like the glass itself, turning the grand promenade of the symphony hall into its own enchanted banquet hall. Below, long banquet tables overflowed with fruits and flowers, with dramatic candle chandeliers suspended above, echoing both the feasts within the opera and the abundance of the season. Our rule at the Met is always the same: never replicate what is already on stage. That would be silly and disrespectful to this extraordinary company. Rather, the goal is to be inspired by the production — to create something sensitively adjacent. And the room?
