Gujarat Police have won praise on social media after deploying undercover women officers at Garba venues during Navratri to ensure the safety of female attendees. Dressed in traditional chaniya cholis, the officers are blending into festive crowds, dancing alongside revellers while discreetly monitoring suspicious activities and potential harassment. The initiative is being carried out by Ahmedabad Police’s specialised SHE Teams, tasked with protecting women, children and senior citizens. A video shared by Ahmedabad Police shows female officers participating in Garba celebrations while remaining on duty, making them virtually indistinguishable from other attendees. At a Garba venue in Ahmedabad’s Sarkhej area, officers reportedly inspected CCTV cameras, reviewed security arrangements and monitored individuals suspected of secretly recording women. During one inspection, police checked a man’s phone after noticing him filming female participants. According to local reports, he was found to be recording women from his own group. Authorities have deployed multiple teams across Garba venues, including party plots, clubs and community celebrations. Around 300 SHE Team personnel from Ahmedabad’s 49 police stations are involved in late-night patrolling, while eight teams are monitoring venues across western Ahmedabad. Officers will continue surveillance throughout Navratri, remaining alert to harassment, inappropriate behaviour and requests for assistance. The initiative has also sparked a wider conversation about women’s safety in public spaces. While the undercover deployment has attracted appreciation, social media users are calling for similar measures to be implemented across India throughout the year, rather than being limited to festivals.
