Yes, “Emosanal Attyachaar” from Dev.D was credited to Band Master Rangeela and Rasila… and for years people thought they were actual singers. They were not. Amit Trivedi and Amitabh Bhattacharya had actually sung the scratch version themselves. The plan was to later replace it with professional qawwali singers.

There was just one problem. Amitabh Bhattacharya apparently hated the idea because he was singing in a funny, exaggerated style and worried people would never take him seriously as a singer after this. So they hid behind fake names and became “Band Master Rangeela and Rasila from Himachal Pradesh.”

And somehow these imaginary people ended up creating one of the most iconic songs of that era.
