Naam ya daam? Actors who changed their name.

Were you aware that the most celebrated actors like Dilip Kumar, Akshay Kumar, Tabu, Saif Ali Khan, Jackie Shroff, John Abraham and more had some other names initially?

Bollywood really carries a lot of secrets. Can their original names not suit the movies?

Toh fir naam ya daam?

The time when the world became silent for these two legends. Jagjit Singh and Eric Clapton something extremely sad and same. And still chose to heal people with their art.

A Bohemian is a free spirit. Bohemia wanted to known as a free spirit. Someone who belongs to no single world but draws from all of them.

Roger David, born into a Punjabi Christian family, raised across cities, and thrown into Oakland at thirteen with nothing familiar except the language in his chest and poetry in his head, could not have chosen a more honest name.

He lost his mother when he was around fifteen. Started playing keyboards at local desi events just to survive. Then walked into a recording studio in West Oakland where his cousin worked, met a producer named Sha One, and recited something he had written in Punjabi.

Sha One said, rap that over this beat. That moment created an entire genre.

His debut album Vich Pardesan De in 2002 meant In The Foreign Land. A Punjabi boy documenting immigrant life in America over hip hop beats. It hit the BBC Radio UK Top 10. Nobody had made a full Punjabi rap album before him.

Then the next album, the first full-length Punjabi rap album on a major label. Kali Denali, Kurti, Sahara. Songs an entire generation memorised line for line without fully understanding why they hit so hard, until they were old enough to know what longing actually felt like.

Da Rap Star sat at number one on Planet M. He did the title track for Chandni Chowk To China with Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone, and many more popular songs. by @rish.tv._

Dream Girl came out in 1977 and it still looks like something you would make today if you were really, truly trying. Directed by Pramod Chakravorty, starring Dharmendra and Hema Malini, music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal, voices of Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. Every ingredient was perfect.

But the thing people keep coming back to is a shot in the dream sequence where Dharmendra appears to walk across Hema Malini’s dupatta, which is stretched across the screen like a landscape.

This was forced perspective, one of the oldest tricks in visual storytelling. The same technique Peter Jackson used for the hobbits in Lord of the Rings three decades later. You place one subject far from the camera and another very close, and calibrate the distance so precisely that the eye reads them as the same scale.

Hema Malini plays five different characters in the film, Sapna, Padma, Champabai, Dream Girl and Rajkumari, and the film basically became her identity for years. She had been called the Dream Girl since her debut, and this film finally gave that nickname a visual world to live inside.

They made something timeless without a single tool that exists today. Just imagination and craft and the willingness to figure it out on the floor of a set in 1976.

70’s Bollywood was a definitely one of the best times for cinema. by @rish.tv._

Seems like Punjabis have pioneered music in so many ways.

Prakash Kaur and Surinder Kaur are the same legends behind Bajre Da Sitta, Kala Dooria, and Sade Ta Vehre Mud Makayee Da.

Surinder Kaur was even called the Nightingale of Punjab. She won the Padma Shri in 2006, and their voices were so trained in classical music that the only contemporary they could be compared to was Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

But in 1943 when Prakash took thirteen year old Surinder to Lahore Radio for an audition, both of them passed, and both of them knew what they were risking. Because at that time, it was a taboo for a Punjabi woman to raise her voice commercially. To sing for strangers.

Society had very fixed ideas about what that meant for a family’s honour.

So they sang anyway. And they kept their faces out of it for as long as they could.

And now Francis Mercier, a Haitian DJ playing rooms in Ibiza and Dubai, took that melody and placed it over a deep house beat. And a whole new generation is searching for a song they cannot name, by two women they have never heard of, from a time most of them know nothing about.

Punjabi folk music did not need anyone’s permission to last forever. Just look at where it ended up.

The name was a tribute to their haters. Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo met in 1987 at a school in Paris. They formed a guitar band called Darlin in 1992. A music magazine reviewed them and called their sound “daft punky thrash.” They broke up the band, kept the insult, and turned it into a name. That is how Daft Punk was born.

People have also stated another reason behind their masks. Their favourite film as teenagers was Phantom of the Paradise, a 1974 Brian De Palma film whose lead character is disfigured and wears a helmet through most of the movie.

At the 2014 Grammys they won five awards including Album of the Year and Record of the Year. They stood on stage in their helmets and said nothing. Pharrell accepted on their behalf. Paul Williams, one of their collaborators, said at the podium, “I got sober and two robots called me and asked me to make an album.”

In 2021 they split with a four minute video.

Thomas later explained it. Technology had caught up. What once felt like a human reaching for something emotional through a machine now felt like something anything could replicate. The idea no longer needed them.

Four albums in 28 years. One More Time. Harder Better Faster Stronger. Get Lucky. Lose Yourself to Dance. A Coachella set in 2006 people still talk about like a religious experience.

These were the legends who let their music talk for them. by @rish.tv._

Toh Phir Aao was also never written for a film!

Mustafa Zahid, born in Lahore in 1984, was a college kid who loved music more than anything else. He co-founded a band called Roxen in 2004, and the very first demo song they ever uploaded online was Toh Phir Aao. That demo registered over 65,000 downloads in one month , which in 2004, with the internet barely accessible to most people, was a phenomenon.

Roxen’s debut album Rozen-E-Deewar released in 2006 and featured Tera Mera Rishta, which was originally titled Aana Jaana. It was a rock ballad about longing, written by a young man from Lahore for his band, with no Bollywood ambitions whatsoever.

Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt personally reached out and invited Mustafa to sing for Awarapan. Mohit Suri, who was directing, asked him to rework the lyrics slightly to suit the film’s world.

The music did not just support that film. It outlived it.
Both songs became cult classics of a generation. Toh Phir Aao especially became one of those tracks that people associate with a specific heartbreak, a specific year, a specific version of themselves they can never fully return to.

Mustafa went on to sing Bhula Dena for Aashiqui 2 and Zaroorat for Ek Villain , and Tere Bina cementing a career built entirely on songs that sound like they were written specifically for your worst night.

And Emraan Hashmi became synonymous with music we just can’t get enough of!

Imagine! A song is so popular that it just had to be used in the sequel, i.e., Awarapan 2.

There was a time you could not turn on Channel V, MTV or ETC without hearing a DJ Aqeel remix.

Born Aqeel Ali in Hyderabad in 1977, he started DJing private parties in Mumbai in the mid-90s before releasing his debut album Shake It Daddy Mix in 2001. Then came Tu Tu Hai Wahi, his remix of Yeh Wada Raha from 1982, which became one of the most recognisable tracks of the decade. Then Disco 82. Then Aap Jaisa Koi. Kishore Kumar’s voice on a four-on-the-floor beat. Your parents’ songs at your college party. And then songs like Kehedun Tumhe, Chadti Jawaani Meri, and many more.

What made him different was that he kept the original vocals of classic songs intact and built electronic production around them, rather than replacing everything from scratch. The nostalgia stayed. The energy changed. Nobody else was doing it that way.

Over his career he released more than 10 albums and over 300 Bollywood remixes, composed for Salaam Namaste and Fanaa, and owned the Hype Nightclub in Worli, Mumbai. He has performed at private events for the biggest names in Bollywood and cricket, the kind of gatherings that never get covered but everyone knows happened. by @rish.tv._

The Himachali singers who never existed👽👽👽

Yes, “Emosanal Attyachaar” from Dev.D was credited to Band Master Rangeela and Rasila… and for years people thought they were actual singers. They were not. Amit Trivedi and Amitabh Bhattacharya had actually sung the scratch version themselves. The plan was to later replace it with professional qawwali singers.

But then Anurag Kashyap heard it and loved the rawness of it so much that he decided to keep it exactly as it w

There was just one problem. Amitabh Bhattacharya apparently hated the idea because he was singing in a funny, exaggerated style and worried people would never take him seriously as a singer after this. So they hid behind fake names and became “Band Master Rangeela and Rasila from Himachal Pradesh.”

And somehow these imaginary people ended up creating one of the most iconic songs of that era. by @rish.tv._

The world was obsessed with Satyajit Ray. Christopher Nolan walked into the Criterion Closet in New York a few days ago, looked at thousands of films lining the shelves, and picked up The Apu Trilogy by Satyajit Ray. He said Pather Panchali was “an absolutely incredible film” and that watching it “blew his mind.”

The man who just made The Odyssey is doing homework on a Bengali filmmaker.

Martin Scorsese said “we all need to see the films of Satyajit Ray and re-see them, again and again. Taken all together, they’re one of our greatest treasures.”

Akira Kurosawa, possibly the greatest director Japan ever produced, said “not to have seen the cinema of Ray means existing in the world without seeing the sun or the moon.”

Wes Anderson dedicated his film The Darjeeling Limited entirely to Ray and said Ray was his inspiration for coming to India in the first place, adding that Ray’s films have inspired all his other movies in different ways. He even used a piece of Ray’s original score from Charulata in the film.

Francis Ford Coppola, the man behind The Godfather, remembered a phone call from Ray in which Ray praised The Godfather and complimented Marlon Brando and Al Pacino by name. Coppola said we know of Indian cinema through Ray’s work.

Satyajit Ray was born in Calcutta in 1921 into one of Bengal’s most literary families. His grandfather was a writer. His father was a poet. He himself was a filmmaker, a writer, a composer, a graphic designer, a calligrapher, and an illustrator, who served as writer, producer, director, cameraman, composer, and even calligrapher of opening credits for many of his own films.

What a legend! by @rish.tv._
