After demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, the Congress has sparked another controversy, this time targeting Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. The party’s Kerala unit publicly asked the CJI to resign and claimed it would find his replacement, triggering backlash from the BJP and legal associations.

The controversy erupted on Monday after CJI Surya Kant responded to questions about restrictions on protests in Delhi, explaining that maintaining law and order did not fall within his jurisdiction.

Reacting to his remarks, Kerala Congress posted on X: “Dear Surya Kant, if law and order is not your domain, resign now. We will find your replacement who can handle it.”

The post was subsequently deleted following widespread criticism. Kerala Congress president Sunny Joseph clarified that the statement had been published without the knowledge or approval of the party leadership and announced that the person responsible had been removed from their duties.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court Registry flagged 14 procedural defects in a petition filed by Rahul Gandhi and 10 other INDIA bloc leaders challenging alleged electoral irregularities and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The objections included a ₹220 shortfall in court fees, an illegible copy of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s identity card, missing lawyer authorisations for nine petitioners, incomplete documents and formatting issues.

The petition, filed following a massive opposition march towards the Supreme Court, seeks an independent investigation into alleged voter deletions and the Election Commission’s decision-making process.

However, the Registry’s objections mean the petition has not yet been cleared for a hearing. The Supreme Court has not rejected the petition on its merits, and the defects can be corrected by the petitioners.

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju criticised Congress over the resignation demand, accusing the party of targeting constitutional institutions.
