🍴Morsels by Abe Moss 🍴
🚨Out October 6th!
Evan is taking Connie to a family gathering. He is not particularly excited to show her his family, who he describes as cold, egocentric people, but when they arrive, to his surprise, his family is extremely welcoming and warm, even embracing them. Evan finds it surreal because he knows nothing about this side of his family. As they settle in, Connie is asked to help prepare dinner. Connie overhears strange noises coming from the basement, which is where our story really begins.
The novel’s strongest point is its writing. Moss knows exactly how each scene will look and describes it with great detail without losing sight of the story and characters’ depth. It was a really entertaining read, with twist after twist after twist. My only issue with the novel is its timing. The first part was the best; you learned everything you could about what was going on, and the context/scenery was developed enough to keep going. The problem is that we go from this place to the woods, and as soon as we leave the house, it gets long, and I find myself waiting for something to happen, for another twist to come, or something. Instead, we’re walking, chained, for a few chapters. It didn’t completely ruin the story for me because they were clearly going somewhere, and we got there!
I appreciate the beautiful writing and the gore. The story was a 3/5 for me. This is my honest review.
For fans of “Ready or Not,” “Get Out,” and “Us.” It is a fun, quick Halloween read.
