Muir Glacier in Alaska’s Glacier Bay was once a huge tidewater glacier extending into Muir Inlet.

When naturalist John Muir explored Glacier Bay in 1879, the area was still dominated by ice, although the glacier system had already been retreating from its Little Ice Age maximum.

In 1941, glaciologist William O. Field photographed this view with the valley still largely filled by Muir Glacier. Field spent decades documenting glaciers in Alaska and elsewhere, creating photographic records that later became especially valuable for measuring long-term changes.

In 2004, USGS geologist Bruce F. Molnia returned to the same location and photographed the dramatically altered landscape. By then, Muir Glacier had retreated more than 7 miles (11 km) from its 1941 position, exposing mountainsides and leaving a large body of water where thick ice had once stood.
