During the first hours of early voting, voters walking to the polls in Miami Gardens, Florida’s largest majority Black city, were pelted with a caustic message over loudspeakers encouraging them to vote Democratic and against the man aiming to become Florida’s first Black governor.

“For governor and lieutenant governor, David Jolly and Gwen Graham. We must have a change in Tallahassee,” a track recorded by a Black Miami-Dade Democratic Party state committeewoman repeated over and over. “Stay away from the coon. You know who it is.”

In case you don’t, the man described with a racial slur casting him as a shame to his own race is Byron Donalds, a three-term Republican congressman with Jamaican and Panamanian heritage asking Black voters to do what he did years ago and leave the Democratic Party. He is endorsed by Donald Trump, has spoken out against diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and voted against legislation like the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act, all of which has helped make him unpopular with Black voters — and created a hostile environment among those who do support him.

Eight years after another Black man lost the governor’s race to Ron DeSantis by less than 32,000 votes, Black voters in Florida are finding themselves torn and even divided over Byron Donalds’ bid to make history.

November is Epilepsy Awareness Month 💜

I’ve gone back and forth about sharing this because, for a long time, epilepsy was just a part of my life that I kept pretty private.

There are so many parts of someone’s story that you can’t see just by looking at them. The fears they’ve carried, the things they’ve had to learn to live with, the moments that have changed them, and the strength they’ve had to find along the way.

Epilepsy is one of those parts of my story.

It has taught me that strength doesn’t always look like being fearless. Sometimes strength is learning how to live fully even when there are things you can’t control. It’s choosing to keep dreaming, laughing, loving people, and showing up for your life without knowing exactly what tomorrow will hold.

There have been moments when I wished this wasn’t part of my story. But looking back, I can also see how much it has shaped the way I see life. It has made me more grateful for ordinary days, more aware of what other people may be carrying silently, and more appreciative of every opportunity I get to do what I love.

Most importantly, I’ve learned that having epilepsy does not make me any less capable, strong, or myself.

I’m still learning. I’m still growing. And I’m still trusting God with the parts of my story that I don’t always understand.

So this month, I’m sharing a piece of mine in hopes that someone else feels a little less alone — and as a reminder to be kind. You truly never know what someone is fighting behind the scenes. 💜

Epilepsy is a part of my story.
It is not the definition of it.
