Michael Smith operated thousands of fake accounts across Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music between 2017 and 2024, generating fraudulent streams that produced millions in royalties. Prosecutors said his operation involved as many as 10,000 active bot accounts, exposing how automated streaming can manipulate music platforms into paying for songs with no genuine listeners. Traders predict only a 7% chance Taylor Swift will be the #1 Spotify artist this year.
