Reporters appeared shaken as they described the horrific events that occurred when Tennessee attempted to execute Christa Pike, the first woman to receive the death penalty in the state in 200 years. After two lethal injections failed, Governor Bill Lee (R-TN) temporarily paused executions until the end of the year to review what took place.
Kumartuli has its own kind of chaos. The heat sits on your skin, the lanes are crowded, people are carrying clay, straw, paint, bamboo, half-finished idols. Somewhere a craftsman is completely absorbed in giving shape to a face. A few feet away, photographers are trying to find their frame, models are adjusting sarees, someone is shouting for space, someone else is rushing to finish work before Puja. And somehow, in the middle of all that noise, there is an incredible amount of focus. That stayed with me. We often imagine transformation as something calm, beautiful and perfectly planned. But real change is rarely like that. It is messy. There are unfinished parts, distractions, wrong turns, corrections, heat, pressure and sometimes a lot of people watching while you are still figuring things out. And maybe that is okay. Because what struck me at Kumartuli was thisโ€”nobody seemed embarrassed by the unfinished stage. The work was simplyโ€ฆ in progress. I think we could afford to give ourselves the same permission. To be seen while we are learning. To change our minds. To reshape parts of ourselves. To not have the final picture ready yet. Some things become beautiful precisely because someone was patient enough to keep working on them. #durgapuja #saree #kumartuli #traditional #festivevibes
