If you haven’t heard about the Cornell case, you should. A former Cornell student has filed a lawsuit alleging that seven Chi Phi fraternity members drugged and sexually assaulted her over the course of a horrific night in October 2024. Matthew Ingalls. Jonathan Newell. Winston Lee. Gillio Lopes. Diego Sarabia. Scott Norris. Scott Kretzschmar. Those are the seven men named as defendants in the civil complaint. According to the lawsuit, a message was sent to a fraternity Snapchat group suggesting that a woman upstairs was available for sex. The lawsuit alleges additional men then entered the room and that the assaults continued for hours. My wife was telling me the details of this case, and I couldn’t even listen to all of it. We have two teenage daughters. You read something like this and immediately think about your own children. Their friends. Your wife. Your sister. Someone you love. But there’s something else I can’t stop thinking about: The people who could have spoken up. Men, it is not enough to say, “I would never do something like that.” If you see your friend crossing a line, SPEAK UP. Interrupt it. Get help. Protect the person in danger. Call the police. Being a good man isn’t just about what you refuse to do. It’s about what you’re willing to stop someone else from doing. The Tompkins County District Attorney has now reopened the criminal investigation, and the case is expected to be presented to a grand jury. Pay attention to this case. Demand that it be investigated fully and fairly. Demand accountability wherever the evidence leads. And teach our sons that when everyone else stays silent, they need to be the one willing to stand up. Because evil gets a hell of a lot more room to operate when good people decide it isn’t their problem. #cornell #cornelluniversity #cornell7 #saawareness
