We skipped the commercial Highland cow farms that have become a bit of a tourist attraction and instead kept an eye out for these wonderfully whimsical creatures out in the fields.

And they behave completely differently there. They don’t come wandering over to people expecting treats. They watch you with curiosity, but always with a certain amount of caution, keeping their distance and quietly sizing you up.

It felt very different from seeing cows that have learnt to associate people with food. There was something far more special about simply standing back and watching them behave naturally, on their own terms.

Definitely our favourite way to meet a Highland coo.
