As a neonatologist, the recent measles exposure at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia—including in the NICU—really hit home for me. ❤️ For families with a baby in the NICU, the thought of an exposure to a highly contagious infection can be frightening. The good news is that hospitals and public health teams have protocols in place to respond quickly, and potentially exposed NICU babies are receiving preventive treatment to reduce their risk of serious illness. (Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia) But this is also an important reminder of why vaccination matters—not just for ourselves, but for the people who are too young or medically unable to be vaccinated. Most babies cannot routinely receive their first measles vaccine until 12–15 months of age. That means newborns—including premature and medically fragile babies in our NICUs—depend in part on the immunity of the community around them for an additional layer of protection. (CDC) Measles is extraordinarily contagious, but it is also vaccine-preventable. Two doses of MMR provide the best protection against measles and are recommended for children as part of the routine childhood immunization schedule. (CDC) So this isn’t about judging parents or creating fear. It’s about protecting babies. It’s about giving families accurate information and making sure that when a vulnerable infant needs to be in a hospital, they aren’t unnecessarily exposed to a preventable disease. If your child—or you—aren’t up to date on recommended vaccines, please talk with your pediatrician or healthcare professional. Ask questions. Understand the benefits and risks. And make an informed decision based on the best available evidence. As a neonatologist, I have cared for far too many incredibly fragile babies.
