. A global women’s rights movement is about to be born. See you on November 9 at the German Parliament! I have always dreamed of creating a global women’s movement. A movement led by women who have lived through prison, torture, repression, and life under dictatorships, yet refused to surrender. Today, I am proud to announce that this November, we will hold our first Women, Freedom, and Security Summit at the German Parliament. The story behind this summit is deeply personal and special to me. Last year, Julia Klöckner, President of the German Bundestag, approached me after hearing my speech about the rights of women in Iran and Afghanistan. She promised to support our cause. I jokingly told her, “Many politicians have made promises to me, but those promises never became reality!” But she turned out to be a woman of action. I had several more meetings and conversations with her. Those conversations sparked an idea: bringing courageous women from Iran, Afghanistan, Belarus, Cuba, and other countries ruled by dictatorships together in the heart of the German Parliament. Women who have spent years being the subject of politicians’ speeches will now stand behind the podium themselves, so that politicians can finally hear their united voices. I feel a little nervous, but above all, incredibly proud—especially of all the women who have worked behind the scenes with love and solidarity to help me turn this dream into reality. This is only the beginning.
