My show Sidewise opens today at DePree Art Center
@hopeartdept in Holland, MI! The show caps my 8-week residency at the school earlier this summer.
The wall text reads:
In the eight weeks of the Borgeson residency, I made each component of this show—from the paper for the prints, to the felted sheep’s wool that wraps the tunnel, and the welded metal of its structure—here in this building. During a crit, a friend once said to me, I feel like your practice is just a way to make labor for yourself. It was insightful, because it was and remains true. I am curious about the weight of materials and the labor it takes to fabricate a mundane object like a sports net. Through my work, I learn about the resources (time, money, skill, material) it takes to bring a thing in to the world. For that reason, I allow my research to lead me through my projects. It doesn’t matter that I haven’t made something out of felt before: I can learn how to make it, really learn through weeks or months of trying it out.
The themes in this show circulate around permeability and access. While *Net Fence* implies sport it functions as a barrier to movement. The towel in *Screenshot-Bianca-Andreescu-v-Serena-Williams-US-Open-Final-2019* grants the player physical and psychological interiority, but blocks the viewer out. *Agility Tunnel*—inspired by the cross species communication of the sheep, shepherd, and sheep dog—allows for passage, transformation, and/or a space to rest. In this installation, I implicate my own body and the viewer’s, calling attention to movement and an invitation to look up, crawl through, walk slowly and touch.
Sidewise is open until Sep 25, when I will also give an artist talk.
