Halloween is a time for things that go bump in the night. National parks have plenty of those.

Boo!

Still with us?

From mysterious noises in the woods to wildlife that would prefer you keep your distance, the great outdoors can be downright spooky after dark. But the scariest encounters often have less to do with ghosts and more to do with poor planning, questionable decisions, and the occasional tree root working in cahoots with gravity.

Whether you’re hiking a shadowy trail, camping beneath a full moon, or simply enjoying the autumn scenery, a few simple precautions can help keep your adventure from becoming a horror story.

Stay on marked trails, watch your step, give wildlife plenty of space, check the weather, and pack the essentials. And if something in the woods starts whispering your name? Well, perhaps don’t investigate.

Good luck!
