Dearborn police say a drone helped officers locate a group of 15- and 16-year-olds after they assaulted an 85-year-old man and attempted to carjack him in a shopping mall parking lot. The incident happened Oct. 3, according to police. Information from the 911 call was sent to the department’s Real-Time Intelligence Center while the caller was still speaking with dispatchers. Police said a department drone arrived over the scene about 30 seconds after deployment. About 1 minute and 18 seconds into the call, the drone operator radioed, “I have them.” Officers used information from dispatch and the drone’s aerial view to locate and arrest the teens, police said. The department released video of the response.
