It’s @ditavonteese birthday! And modern glamour would look very different without her. Burlesque, showgirl culture and erotica history are as visible as they are today partly because of her. It sounds like a big statement, but Dita reclaimed a nearly forgotten art form as the foundation of her career, and inadvertently turned it into a movement. By the ‘70s, classic burlesque had largely disappeared in favor of modern strip-club culture. Corsets, feather fans and theatrical shows became the territory of collectors, historians and vintage enthusiasts. That’s where Heather Sweet found them. A natural blonde growing up in California, she worked at a lingerie boutique, where she discovered corsetry, Bettie Page and pinup culture. Fascinated by 1940s Hollywood, she dyed her hair black, thrifted vintage clothes and gradually constructed the woman the world would come to know as Dita Von Teese. While studying old pinup magazines, she noticed that many of the models were also burlesque stars. So she decided to create shows of her own. The problem? There was basically no scene left to learn from. She performed in strip clubs and at fetish parties, piecing together what burlesque had been through photographs and magazines. She even sought out surviving legends like Dixie Evans, who coached her over the phone on how to work a pair of feather fans. At 19, she was already working in fetish modeling, fascinated by an erotic world built around fantasy rather than nudity. She was also an early digital pioneer, launching one of the first websites built around a model selling her own photographs directly to fans, years before the creator economy was even a thing. Her collaboration with Catherine D’Lish elevated everything: increasingly elaborate costumes and props turned the revival into spectacle. Then came Playboy. After appearing in its Book of Lingerie in ‘99, Dita landed the December ‘02 cover and centerfold, bringing the underground fantasy to the mainstream. Since then, she’s done it all: music, art, film, TV, fashion, magazines and world tours! Thank you for keeping the lights on for an art form that could have easily been left in the dark.
