People wear costumes on Halloween because of ancient traditions associated with spirits and the supernatural. The custom is often traced to the Celtic festival of Samhain, when people believed the boundary between the living and the dead became thinner. Some wore disguises or masks, possibly to protect themselves from wandering spirits. Over time, these traditions blended with European customs involving costumes, performances, and celebrations.
Halloween costumes became especially popular in America during the 20th century, evolving from frightening disguises into outfits inspired by superheroes, celebrities, movies, and cartoons. Interestingly, Halloween is now one of the few occasions when adults can dress as completely fictional characters without attracting strange looks.
