Freddy Peralta is an interesting case study in in-season adjustments since joining the Rays.

Let’s break down some of the changes he’s made – and what this can teach us about in-season adjustments. 🤔

First – and most obvious is that his release side has shifted 4 inches further towards 3B. This was the direct result of shifting his position on the rubber to play up the angles – an intentional change that makes sense given the league-wide positive trend of same-sided four seams and breaking balls.

📐 FF horizontal approach angle to RHH: -2.59 → -2.93°
📐 Horizontal release angle: -2.96 → -3.70°
📐 Sweeper HAA now at -5.13°, well into outlier territory (Slide 3)

Let’s take a look at some of the other metrics:

📊 Extension: 6.5 → 6.7 ft
📊 Effective velocity on FF: 94.5 → 95.5 mph (actual velo: 94.2 → 94.8 mph)
📊 Lower release height from increased trunk flexion
📊 VAA: -4.06 → -3.79° on the fastball, elite territory alongside Kimbrel and Diaz (Slide 4)

But where does this come from? Take a look at the early lateral tilt generated with the Mets versus the more stacked initial move with the Rays. Among other things, this leads to a more stacked posture into landing and a more forward-flexed trunk at ball release. It also creates better angles to rotate into the lead leg block, helping to explain the slight bump in velocity as well.

Looking further into the first move, take a look at the pre-set back leg hinge and the forward trunk posture. Not only does this pre-set him in a more glute-dominant position, but his leg lift now drives him into a coiled position at the pelvis. Instead of leaning backwards into peak leg lift, he’s pre-setting tension, finding his glute, and coiling into a stable back leg without tipping uphill.

My therapist said that when I’m angry I should go for a walk…
Long story short, I’m in Paris now. 🇫🇷

I’ve admired @_nyclive_ ’s work for so long, so when he messaged me in Paris asking if I wanted to collab, I almost fell off my chair. 😂🔥

We also almost stopped traffic at the Arc de Triomphe. No influencers were harmed in the making of this video.

What do you think of our collab? 🖤
