1/ The young woman behind Lagos Life, the phenomenal game that attracted over 2 million players in its first few days, began her tech journey in our unassuming training room in Aba, Abia State. reactant_ / Tit0k Her name is Shalom. This is her story and ours. 🧵 A thread. 2/ April 30, 2018. LearnFactory opened its doors to young people for a free six-month software internship in Aba. No tuition. No catch. Twenty young people came from across Nigeria. Twelve completed the programme. The youngest of them all was a girl who had just finished secondary school. 3/ We called her “the last baby.” Life was not gentle with her at the time. She was carrying more than any girl her age should have had to bear. But she never used her circumstances as an excuse. She focused on the programme and gave it everything she had. 4/ Day in, day out, she showed up. She took on the 100 Days of Code challenge without flinching. She asked questions until there were no more answers, then went looking for more. She was like my little daughter in that room, and I watched her refuse to quit. 5/ October 2018 — the internship ended. Her journey didn't. She continued teaching herself, took on small jobs, wrote a book, landed remote work, and earned a UK Global Talent visa in 2023. Then, on October 1, 2026, she built Lagos Life overnight and tweeted the link at 7 a.m. By 10 a.m., it was trending. 6/ Over 2 million players in days. Brands buying billboards inside a virtual Lagos. An entire country debating rent inside a game. Built by a young woman who started in Aba with hunger, determination, and a place that gave her the opportunity to learn. That last part is why I'm writing this.
Pure temptation.
