Rodney Hinton Jr. Murder Trial: Prosecutors Say Revenge, Defense Says Psychotic Break After Son’s Police Shooting Blogged by: Grace L. Rodney Hinton Jr.’s murder trial entered its first full day of testimony Thursday, October 8, as attorneys presented two very different explanations for why a grieving Cincinnati father drove his vehicle into a sheriff’s deputy just hours after watching footage of police fatally shooting his teenage son. The Rodney Hinton trial has become a closely watched case involving mental illness, police use of force, and criminal responsibility. According to WLWT News 5, Hinton’s attorneys maintain that he was experiencing a psychotic break when he struck Hamilton County Deputy Larry Henderson Jr. on May 2, 2025. Prosecutors argue the collision was intentional and motivated by revenge. Opening statements began Wednesday, October 7, before Hamilton County Common Pleas Judge Jody Luebbers. Jurors also visited the location where Henderson was killed near the University of Cincinnati. According to WCPO 9’s courtroom coverage, Assistant Prosecutor Heidi Rosales told jurors that Hinton drove along Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, waited for opposing traffic to clear, and accelerated across several lanes toward Henderson. The deputy was directing traffic during the university’s graduation weekend and wearing a bright safety vest. Rosales argued that Hinton’s driving before the collision demonstrated awareness and deliberate decision making. She maintained that he knew his actions were wrong, even while dealing with the emotional aftermath of his son’s death. As FOX19 reported, Rosales told the jury, “Emotional distress does not excuse murder.” But Hinton’s defense attorney, Clyde Bennett II, challenged the prosecution’s interpretation of his client’s actions. Bennett argued that Hinton had struggled with serious psychiatric conditions long before the deaths of his son and Henderson.

A little 90s themed moment for Rimsha’s first dholki. ❤️
Tennis great John McEnroe is hardly known for his mellow temperament. But his house in Malibu, Calif., he said, has been a calming force. Now, McEnroe and his wife, singer-songwriter Patty Smyth, are listing the beachfront property for $35 million. McEnroe and Smyth, who married in 1997, bought the Paradise Cove home for $21 million in 2015. Built in the mid-1990s, the roughly 6,500-square-foot, four-bedroom home sits on 0.3 acre in Malibu’s coveted Paradise Cove neighborhood. Known to local real-estate agents as Billionaires’ Bluff, the enclave is known for its blufftop estates, as well as beach houses, like McEnroe’s, on the sand. Twice, the enclave has broken the record for the most expensive home ever sold in California. Beyoncé and Jay-Z own a home there, as well as technology heavyweights such as venture capitalist Marc Andreessen and Laurene Powell Jobs. The property includes a landscaped front yard with a waterfall and a tiki hut-style pavilion that is used as a gym or for yoga, according to listing agent Chris Cortazzo of Compass. Inside, the main level includes a large living room with access to an oceanfront deck. Read the full story at the link in @wsjrealestate's bio. 📸: Mike Helfrich; Chad Salvador/WWD/Getty Images (Inset)
