Some emcees make you want to pick up a microphone. Others make you question whether you deserve to hold one. Before the world knew him as Treach, @treachtribe Anthony Criss was a kid from East Orange, New Jersey, sharpening his craft alongside Vin Rock and DJ Kay Gee. From classroom desk beats and neighborhood talent shows to Queen Latifah opening doors, Naughty by Nature became something nobody could manufacture. And when the world caught on to “O.P.P.” and “Hip Hop Hooray,” something extraordinary happened. Millions were celebrating records whose lyrical complexity many hadn't even begun to comprehend. Perhaps that's the most beautiful thing about Hip Hop. A young man in Jersey perfects a craft without knowing that somewhere in Detroit, another young man will hear him and have his entire understanding of greatness rearranged. Neither could have imagined how far that influence would travel. And decades later, the student still speaks of the teacher with the same awe he felt before the world knew his name. That's a legacy no chart position can measure. We spend so much time asking w
