Food noise, sugar cravings and bloating, even though you’re eating a high protein, low carb breakfast? 😩 I see this ALL THE TIME clinically. The same total energy (calories) can have very different effects on your blood sugar and energy depending on where those calories come from 💡 Your brain runs best on glucose, which mostly comes from carbohydrates. Fat and protein keep you full, but the energy they contain is released slowly. If your breakfast is mostly fat and protein, you can feel full but still be low on usable energy. If you exercise first thing, or are just busy through the morning, that can leave you searching for more food, especially sweet things, even if you’ve technically had enough fuel. This is the difference between total energy consumed and how available that energy is for your body to use. For many people, that looks like thinking about snacks by 11am, needing something sweet after lunch or mid-afternoon, or wanting to pick at food all day. A high protein, low carb diet is also often low in soluble fibre, or just skewed to slow transit foods, which will cause bloating, and grazing will make that worse.  Fat and protein both matter, but adding a slow-release carb like wholegrain toast, oats or potatoes gives your brain what it’s looking for, your energy levels stabilise, and cravings and food noise go quiet. Everyone’s needs are a little different, but if these issues feel constant even though you’re eating well, this simple change to breakfast can make a real difference.
