Photo by Michael Astley-Brown on August 27, 2026. May be an image of magazine, poster and text that says 'Sleep Token love them. Progressive guitar heroes worship them. But they imploded spectacularly. This is the story of unsung prog icons Oceansize: "We put ourselves through hell because we knew we were better than everybody else in the music industry" Major players including Misha Mansoor and Yvette Young have cited Oceansize as an influence, yet the combustible UK outfit remain under the radar -ir in part because they simply cannot be imitated'.

@mikevennart won't remember this, but 16 years ago, I told him how much his band Oceansize meant to me. I might have rambled about them being the perfect blend of Mogwai, Soundgarden and every other artist I adored. We took this goofy picture. Then they split up a few months later. I don't think a band ending has ever affected me quite so much.

When I got into this guitar journalism lark, I vowed to one day write a feature detailing their influence – because it goes deeper than anyone in that group realises. It's taken the best part of a year to track down all the folks I wanted to speak to, and I'm more proud of this @guitarworldmagazine piece than anything else I've written. This band matters. Niche music matters. Progressive, sky-scraping, otherworldly, weird-ass music matters. It changes lives. It helped me through every difficult moment in my own existence, and inspired me to make weird-ass music with three guitarists.

Big thanks to @mishaperiphery, @nollyggd and @yvetteyoung for giving up their time to talk to me about how singularly brilliant this band is. Thank you to Mike for sharing these stories. And thank you to Oceansize for championing big, high-concept songs that don't always make sense when you first hear them, but go on to unfurl and embed themselves in your brain over weeks, months, years, decades. We need more music like that in this world

I think the bit of Unfamiliar you used here might be what finally got them to click for me many years ago. So bummed I never got to see them.

The period of time I spent going to see them was one of the best of my life

Fantastic article. Oceansize were the best to ever do it. Sadly never got to see them live in full but have at least been lucky to see Mike, Gambler and Steve break out a few ‘Size tunes at Vennart shows over the years.

Great article for an almighty band, good work! I think I first heard them in 2003 and they’re still amazing even now!

I will never be able to express in words how much Oceansize means to me. ❤️

You know there are some bands who genuinely change the trajectory of your music taste and therefore your life? Hearing Oceansize in 2005 did that to me. I’m so grateful they existed, so grateful I got to see them a bunch of times, and so grateful for the legacy they left behind. Maybe one day I’ll pluck up the courage to speak to @mikevennart but in 20 years of going to see him in various iterations it hasn’t happened yet 😂

Every word in your post re Oceansize is bang on the money. I had the honour and the privilege of mixing foh for them on a few occasions years back and every show was the most amazing sonic journey. A personal highlight was when we played Den Paard in The Hague, Netherlands on my birthday and Mike Vennart dedicated Massive Bereavement to me. Utterly breathtaking every time, a band for the ages certainly!! Looking forward to reading your piece Michael. 🙏😎

When I feel low and at the end of it all, I can put that band on and it all just melts away. I was meant to watch them play Heaven many moons ago, and like a twat I didn't go. Wasn't long after that they disbanded.

I remember a mate in a pub saying he’d just seen this incredible band from Manchester. I was expecting it to be the usual indie stuff. Then he said they sounded like Pink Floyd meets Soundgarden and I spat my pint out in surprise. It was so refreshing.

I LOVE everything about this and what it stands for. Mike - in many ways, Maebe means to me (and many others) what Oceansize means to you. The first Maebe record rode shotgun with me through some hard sh*t. Some bands stay with us forever. Oceansize is also one of those bands.

Love this! I saw them at the Witchwood as a teenager and they were one of the first bands I ever reviewed. Gorgeous music 🖤
