Rihanna’s “Cockiness (Love It)” is built around one of the strangest, most instantly recognisable samples in her catalogue. Produced by Bangladesh, the track flips a snippet of Greg Kinnear performing “Summertime” in the 2003 comedy Stuck on You, turning an unexpected vocal moment into the foundation for a provocative, off-kilter dancehall and dubstep hybrid. Rather than smoothing out the sample, the production lets its unusual character sit right in the middle of the beat. Released on Talk That Talk in 2011, “Cockiness (Love It)” shows Rihanna leaning into a more experimental, sexually assertive side of her pop persona. Bangladesh built the instrumental by chopping up samples he had been collecting, then developed the track around the repeated “I love it” hook.
