My Pregnancy Journey, Part 2: I really struggled with how deeply I grieved the pregnancy I thought I was supposed to have. I felt guilty being upset when there was still so much to be grateful for. How could I be so selfish when other people had experienced unimaginable loss? It took a long time for me to accept that grief and gratitude can exist simultaneously. I had to allow myself to sufficiently grieve the pregnancy I had imagined before I could fully appreciate the one I was living. And there was so much to appreciate. How fortunate were we to have discovered the complications when we did? There’s nothing scarier than touching your belly and not feeling movement. But every time our baby boy was quiet, I had the reassurance of a nurse, a doctor, or a monitor that he was still there. He was still okay. Stephen and I truly made the best of our extended hospital stay. We celebrated every heartbeat, along with every additional day and week of pregnancy. We found joy in the little things like walks around campus and biweekly ultrasounds where we got to see our little man, and the comfort of knowing we were exactly where we needed to be. Things we probably would have taken for granted in a normal pregnancy meant absolutely everything to us. Despite spending six weeks confined to a hospital bed, and despite all the fear and uncertainty of whether our son would make it, I can still look back on that time fondly.
