“For years now, pop music has been suffused with a vague, or coded, malaise,” Amanda Petrusich writes. “It’s increasingly evident that everyone feels dread and anxiety about the apparent grimness of the world, though they stop short from saying too much about the particulars..” For Fontaines D.C., a young and brainy rock band from Dublin, with post-punk, New Wave, and electronica influences, private existential terror takes center stage. On their fifth album, “Dopamine Chamber,” the quintet wrestles with how to seek pleasure while remaining hyperaware of the devastations of the world. Their “particular pairing—viciousness and smarts—feels scarce these days, when the world’s most powerful institutions seem to prefer that we be anodyne and dumb,” Petrusich writes. The amount of tippy-top peaks this old gal has danced across 🩰

If you've ever wondered how I could trust my old girl to circle around cliff edges, it's because this is what she's loved doing her whole life. She's always known where she belongs, even if it leaves everyone's heart in their throats.

In case you are newer here, Whiskey has been climbing mountains, logs, and peaks ever since she was a puppy. She's led me to this life of hiking and camping in remote places and we are both all the happier for it. We seek out quiet space, good friends, and take you on these trips together in our stories.

I cried making this reel. She's sleeping right next to me as I post this and I can't imagine a better face to soak my tears in ❤️
