A video of All India Students’ Association (AISA) president Neha Bora alleging that priests commit rape inside temples has triggered a political controversy, with the BJP accusing her of insulting Hindu religious institutions and questioning Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s support for her. The undated clip circulated on November 3. In the video, Bora argues that women need protection from what she describes as the “Brahmanical system”. She alleges that the social order enables the oppression of vulnerable groups and leaves even Brahmin women unsafe. “Priests commit rapes inside temples,” she says, referring to sexual violence cases in Unnao and Kathua while making her argument. Sharing the footage, BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari described Bora as Rahul Gandhi’s “poster girl” and accused her of displaying “Hindu hate”. He sought to connect her remarks with Congress’s ideology, alleging that the party was targeting Hindu faith for electoral interests. BJP leader Gaurav Bhatia also condemned the comments as insulting to Hindu priests. These were the BJP leaders’ allegations. Bora’s reference to Kathua concerns the 2018 rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl who was held captive inside a village temple. In June 2019, a court convicted six men, with temple caretaker Sanji Ram among three sentenced to life imprisonment. The criticism centres on Bora’s sweeping language about priests and religious institutions. Responding to the controversy, BJP leader Nalin Kohli said rape was a heinous crime that should not be communalised, and demanded an apology and clarification over her remarks.
