3 years ago today, Taylor Swift released the Eras Tour movie.

Sam Wrench, who had previously directed concert specials for Billie Eilish and Lizzo, shot 'Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour' over three nights at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles from August 3 to 5, 2023. After studio talks fell through, Swift made an unprecedented distribution deal with AMC Theatres and Cinemark, and her announcement later that month pushed several films, including 'The Exorcist: Believer,' to different release dates. The film premiered at The Grove in Los Angeles on October 11, 2023 and opened wide on October 13. It runs 2 hours and 48 minutes and covers the full Eras setlist, with Swift producing.

Demand showed before opening, with AMC reporting $26 million in presales, a record for the chain, and a single-day ticket-revenue record. The first weekend brought in about $93 million domestically, the second-best October opening behind 'Joker,' and over 70 percent of that weekend's total box office. It became the highest-grossing concert film in North American history in three days, passing the entire run of 'Justin Bieber: Never Say Never,' and it opened at number one in the United Kingdom, Mexico, Australia, Germany, and the Philippines. Fans traded friendship bracelets in theater lobbies and bought collectible popcorn tubs.

Critics and audiences were glowing, with a 99 percent Rotten Tomatoes score and an A+ CinemaScore. The film finished with about $267 million worldwide and landed on Disney+ on March 14, 2024. Variety observed that it rewrote the box office rules in 2023, and AMC's CEO said artists have since been calling about similar deals.
