MUD, MEMORY, AND MEANING (THE LOST ARCHITECTURE OF BENIN) by Taribo Sunday Ariaye & Anedu Isioma Chukwudalu
At the Roots and Roofs Final Showcase, Mud, Memory, and Meaning brought the architectural heritage of the Benin Kingdom into physical form. Handmade mud blocks were assembled on-site to create a building structure, accompanied by a pictorial representation imagining an entire community built with mud architecture. Detailed photographs of the blocks and their making further highlighted the materials, techniques and indigenous knowledge behind Benin’s traditional built environment.
