Lyricist and librettist Alan Jay Lerner was born on this day in 1918!🎼 Alongside writing partner Frederick Loewe, he worked to create some of the most iconic musicals of the 1950s and 60s, including BRIGADOON, CAMELOT, PAINT YOUR WAGON, and MY FAIR LADY. He was nominated for five Tony Awards, winning twice: Best Musical for MY FAIR LADY, and Best Original Score for GIGI.
The grand piano shown here, on which he and Loewe wrote MY FAIR LADY, was passed down through the family of Broadway music director Hal Hastings before finding its home at The Museum of Broadway, on loan from The Broadway Legacy Foundation.

Alan Jay Lerner was a true genius of musical theater, one of the great writers and lyricists who helped define the golden age of Broadway. His work gave us some of the most beloved musicals of all time👏 By the way, in Mexico 🇲🇽we also fondly remember his brother, Robert “Bob” Lerner, who made an extraordinary contribution of his own to Mexican musical theater. Bob was a pioneering producer who brought Broadway to Mexico and partnered with some of the most important names in our theater, including Manolo Fábregas, Silvia Pinal, Julissa, Marcial Dávila and Luis de Llano Palmer, among many others. His Mexican career included Bells Are Ringing with Silvia Pinal in 1958, My Fair Lady with Manolo Fábregas in 1959, Mame the musical with Silvia Pinal, Mame the play with Amparo Rivelles, Annie Get Your Gun, Evita, Lili (Carnival), Pippin, among many others. Bob Lerner built his own remarkable legacy in Mexico and remains fondly remembered as one of the people who helped shape the golden era of Mexican musical theater. 🇲🇽🇲🇽
