Centuries ago, Indian sculptors captured an incredibly detailed hairstyle in stone at the Bhu Varaha Swamy Temple in Tamil Nadu. The woman’s hair is styled into an exceptionally long braid that extends almost to her ankles. Its remarkable length is highlighted by carved bands, floral decorations, and ornamental medallions placed along the center of the braid. Sculptures like this should not necessarily be viewed as realistic portraits of ordinary women. Temple artists often portrayed goddesses, dancers, attendants, and idealized royal or courtly figures dressed in the finest clothing, jewelry, and hairstyles of their time. Their exaggerated beauty and elegance symbolized qualities such as fertility, abundance, femininity, and divine perfection. Nevertheless, these sculptures provide valuable insight into how hair may have been styled and decorated in the past. Long braids were practical in India’s warm climate, but they also came to represent femininity and sophistication. Wealthier women could adorn their braids with flowers, ribbons, precious metals, and jeweled ornaments. Hair extensions may also have been used to achieve the dramatic lengths represented in artwork. Many of these traditions continue today. Long, decorated braids remain an important part of South Indian bridal attire and classical dance costumes, connecting modern celebrations and performances with artistic traditions that originated centuries ago. Additional fact: The ornamental discs traditionally attached along a South Indian braid are known as jada billai.
