“The Philadelphia Story” is a theatrical classic from 1939, starring Katherine Hepburn, which was adapted into a film in 1940…again, starring Katherine Hepburn. The genre was popular in the 1930s and 40s at a time when divorce was considered scandalous, and the depiction of extramarital affairs was blocked by the Hays Code.
The film was nominated for six Academy Awards and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 1995.
