september is childhood cancer awareness month.

I read a quote recently that said “what we learn from them is who we become” and this year, that hits a little differently.

I’ve had the opportunity to work with a really incredible team at St. Jude over the past couple of months and it has been a lot of work, a lot of learning, and a LOT of growth, but I just keep coming back to how grateful I am to be in this position. this opportunity means more than I really could put into words.

I’ve spent a lot of time over the past few years advocating for childhood cancer and talking about how underfunded research is—only 4% of federal funds are allocated towards it. now, having the opportunity to step into the research side of this world, I’ve gained an entirely new perspective and investment in this mission.

Luna was diagnosed my senior year of high school & passed away at the end of my first semester of college. I had no clue how her life would shape mine at the time, I just knew it sucked (and still does let’s be real). I love what I’ve been able to do, but I would give every single thing up if it meant that I could know her now. however, it did happen, and for that reason, I’m thankful for the chance to pour my time & energy into something I hold so close to me. Working with the same institution that fought for her, and doing the work that benefits from the fundraisers I’ve grown up seeing/doing has been fulfilling and overwhelming in all of the ways.

It has felt like each year, I’ve been given the privilege to gain a different perspective on her journey. doing work that you are so passionate about is a special gift that I know not everyone has the opportunity to do, and for that I am so grateful.

so, this September I encourage you to go gold, participate in a fundraiser, use your voice to support these incredible kids, or do all of the above (my personal fav option).

two of my favorites to support (duh): @cookies4kids & @stjude
