Tom’s Diner references Tom’s Restaurant from Seinfeld, where the artist of this song discussed the feeling of seeing life through a window pane with her photographer friend. She wanted to encapsulate the feeling of observing everything from the outside, apparently, and therefore set the song here. Interesting how the feeling of being disconnected from the world and subjects is shared among people who spend time observing. In places that are so familiar yet unfamiliar (like London, where I’ve never actually lived) I find that feeling to be the strongest.
