an epic pirate fantasy that definitely gave pirates of the caribbean vibes. miss victoria aveyard certainly knows how to keep bits of information hidden from us until the last possible second. the dual timeline was an interesting choice for this narrative, and while i enjoyed it for most of the book, it made some of the first half a little slower paced. however, once cat started having more interactions with the pirates things picked up more! and valerian, oh, i loved him!! i wanted to see more of him and was a little sad that we didn't get that much in this book. there was so much tension & chemistry between cat & val, and i can't wait to see where that leads them. i just know the plot twists will get even crazier! i would recommend this to anyone looking for a (very) slow burn pirate fantasy.
