By the standards of national political organizations, the D.S.A., with just under 130,000 members, is tiny. (The National Rifle Association, by comparison, is 50 times the size.) And yet, in the year since Zohran Mamdani, a member, was elected mayor of New York, 123 D.S.A.-backed candidates have won primaries at every level—including 19 nominees for Congress and five for statewide office. What makes this momentum so striking is that the D.S.A.’s process for endorsing candidates is largely left to local chapters. The organization relies on an unusually active and internally disputatious political culture; its members are forever arguing over which candidates to back, and under what conditions.
