Father And Son
I like to give context or details of why I decided to capture and post certain pictures, but this may come off as journaling or emotional dumping. This isn't a remarkable photo, and I don't believe it should be stylized. I apologize for being a bore.
Growing up, my father told me many stories about being raised outside Pittsburgh. He had originally wanted to go to tech school for automotive painting, but joked it would've taken "too long" to get to the classes he was actually interested in. He ended up adopting the same career path as his father, and became an ironworker for American Steel if I am remembering correctly.
Being in the trade meant traveling to where the work was needed. He left home with a few thousand dollars and came to Texas, where he would meet the woman who became my mother. The work would dry up in Texas and him and my mother would move together to California where they would marry and start a family together with my sister.
Their permanent roots were eventually laid back here when I was born, but the work infrequently came here. For nearly a decade I watched my father drive four hours to Houston every Sunday and watch him come back every Friday just to spent what little free time he had with us.
When I was in high-school, we were fortunate in a new building was being planned here, and the company my father worked for was contracted for the structural and glass installation. We were gifted with time we almost never had previously, daily dinners, weekend movies, hunting, and bonding. He finally had the privilege to sleep weeks and months and years in the bed in the house on the property he was working to hard to pay for. That contract was for the Frost Tower, pictured above. It was completed in 2019.
My father passed away a few years later, still working towards a future where he wouldn't have to work, where he could spend his time doing the things he liked with the people he loved. That which was owed, never came. I frequently watch the blue edged glow of the Frost Tower and think of him. I hope I become half the man you were. I have lost so much, but I owe everything I am to you and Mom. I love you Dad.
