In Cut Piece (1964), Yoko Ono invited members of the audience to cut pieces of her clothing with a pair of scissors. What begins with hesitation gradually becomes more invasive, as the audience is given permission to violate personal boundaries.
Given implicit permission to cross a personal boundary, the audience is left to decide for itself how far that permission extends. Ono once described the piece as giving the audience what it wished to take. In doing so, Cut Piece became as much a reflection of the audience as it was a performance by the artist.
