Democrat Adam Hamawy, a Muslim American physician and former U.S. Army combat surgeon who volunteered in Gaza during Israel’s ongoing genocide, has won election to the U.S. House of Representatives in New Jersey’s 12th Congressional District. Hamawy witnessed firsthand the devastation of Israel’s military assault on Gaza, treating wounded Palestinians amid the total destruction of Gaza’s health care system. His humanitarian work brought him into the national spotlight, including his role in treating children injured in Israeli attacks and his outspoken criticism of U.S. support for the genocide. The former Army surgeon helped save the life of former Democratic Sen. Tammy Duckworth after her helicopter was shot down in Iraq in 2004. More than two decades later, the Muslim American veteran and humanitarian surgeon is headed to Congress.
