In the schools of Azerbaijan, wearing a headscarf is now prohibited. I think this is a good thing. As young girls in Iran, we unfortunately had no choice. The ayatollahs forced us to cover ourselves, supposedly to prevent men from being tempted by us. In this way, we were reduced to our sex and officially treated as second-class citizens. Despite being in no way inferior to boys in intelligence or ability, certain people regarded us as nothing more than breeding machines. When I lived in Iran, my dream was to one day take off my headscarf and dress freely as a woman. I no longer wanted to be invisible behind ideologically imposed Islamic clothing. I wanted to be much more than my sex: I wanted to be a successful human being, not someone who had to cover herself to protect men from their own lustful looks. Fortunately, Iranians have always resisted this oppression. But this is what the Islamists wanted to impose on us. Those who refused risked being flogged by the morality police. It is shameful that, in the West today, such a degrading concept, which requires women to cover themselves, is being defended and even presented as a form of emancipation. Let a child be a child. No girl should have to grow up believing that she must cover herself to deserve respect. Yet this is precisely what is taught within Muslim communities: if you do not cover yourself, you become an object of male lust and lose the respect of your community. In Western schools, we must fight for gender equality and prohibit all forms of discrimination against women. The photo below shows me with my classmates when I was 17. Every one of them was a bright girl, chained to the hijab. We worked hard to free ourselves. Yet some of us ultimately fell victim to the ayatollahs. Does the West truly want to help girls growing up in Islamic communities, or does it want to abandon them? Let people enjoy equality and freedom instead of allowing them to be discriminated against by dogmatic religious beliefs and the social pressure of their communities. That is my choice. We live in the West. Let our Western values prevail. #freefromhijab
