PAULSBORO, NEW JERSEY

Sean D. Scott, 45, and India L. Miller, 27, of Paulsboro have been charged with murder following the death of Miller’s 9-year-old daughter, Maya Thomas, who authorities say suffered severe physical abuse.

Prosecutors said the couple called 911 around 1:10 a.m. Tuesday, claiming Maya may have been hit by a car while walking the dog. However, surveillance footage showed no vehicles passing through the area at the time.

Maya was taken to a hospital with extensive bruising, facial injuries, internal trauma, and multiple broken ribs, some in different stages of healing. She died at 6:42 p.m. Tuesday. Medical examiners ruled her death a homicide caused by multiple blunt force injuries.

Investigators allegedly found blood on the bathroom floor, children’s clothing, and cleaning supplies, suggesting an attempt to clean up the scene. Prosecutors also said the couple’s 4-year-old child told police that Scott had struck Maya in the eyes and face.

Maya’s maternal grandmother, Lynn Miller, said she raised the girl from 18 months old until age 7, when her mother moved her to New Jersey to live with Scott. Reports indicate Maya was never enrolled in school and was homeschooled by her mother and stepfather.

Both defendants face charges including first-degree murder, accomplice to murder, child endangerment, hindering, and filing a fictitious police report. They are being held at Salem County Jail and could face life in prison if convicted.
