In a historic moment for India, Bihar Museum in Patna has secured the 9th position among the World’s 100 Best Museums of 2026, surpassing globally renowned institutions including the Louvre in Paris and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The rankings, released by Germany-based travel guide Worth a Journey, place Bihar Museum at No. 1 in Asia, making it the only Indian museum to feature among the world’s top 100. While New York’s Metropolitan Museum secured the 10th position, Paris’ iconic Louvre, home to the Mona Lisa, ranked 31st. The ranking was compiled using visitor reviews, data analysis and on-site expert assessments. Mexico City’s National Museum of Anthropology topped the global list, followed by Madrid’s Prado Museum and Denmark’s Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. Inaugurated in 2015, Bihar Museum showcases the state’s rich history through ancient sculptures, manuscripts, rare coins and traditional folk art. One of its most celebrated attractions is the approximately 2,000-year-old Didarganj Yakshi sculpture. The museum was designed by award-winning Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki in collaboration with Indian architects. The achievement has also drawn praise from industrialist Anand Mahindra, who described the recognition as a potentially transformative moment for India’s museums and expressed hope that it would inspire a museum renaissance across the country. The recognition puts Bihar’s cultural heritage in the international spotlight, demonstrating how a museum barely a decade old has earned a place alongside some of the world’s most established cultural institutions.
