10 years ago today, Sabrina Carpenter released ‘EVOLution.’ Sabrina Carpenter's second album almost had a different lead single. 'Smoke and Fire' was originally meant to introduce 'EVOLution,' but she cut it, saying the evolution came after it. Hollywood Records released the 10-song, 33-minute dance-pop record on October 14, 2016, a departure from the folk-pop and teen pop of her debut 'Eyes Wide Open.' Carpenter co-wrote every track except 'Thumbs,' which Priscilla Renea and Steve Mac wrote. Producers included Ido Zmishlany, Steve Mac, Jimmy Robbins, Ryan Ogren, Rob Persaud, Halatrax, DJ Daylight, and Nonfiction. The rollout began with the lead single 'On Purpose' on July 29, 2016. Promotional singles followed, with 'All We Have Is Love' opening the pre-sale on September 23 and 'Run and Hide' arriving a week later. 'Thumbs' came out as a promo single on October 7 and was released as the second official single in January 2017. A U.S. Evolution Tour ran from October 18 to December 13, 2016. 'EVOLution' debuted at number 28 on the Billboard 200 with 11,500 copies sold in its first week, her highest chart position at that point. Critics noted her maturity and growth, and ANDPOP praised a mature side that experimented with techno beats and an indie but synth-driven take on pop.
