A cow’s body has an aerodynamically complex shape. As it moves through the air, the surface of its body causes changes in air pressure and velocity.

At low speeds, part of the airflow can follow the body’s contours, but flow separation occurs around the legs, ears, tail, and other body parts, creating turbulence and increasing aerodynamic drag.

As the speed increases and approaches Mach 1, air compressibility effects become increasingly dominant. Certain regions of the flow can reach sonic conditions, and shock waves begin to form around the body. Wave drag increases significantly, while the interaction between the shock wave and the boundary layer causes changes in pressure distribution along the body’s surface.

Once past Mach 1, the pressure waves form a conical structure behind the object, known as a Mach cone, producing a sonic boom that propagates through the atmosphere.

At higher altitudes, atmospheric density decreases, making drag and shock wave effects progressively smaller. Once atmospheric influences stop dominating, the object’s motion is governed by orbital mechanics instead, determined by velocity, energy, and angular momentum.

To reach a translunar trajectory, a sufficient delta-v is required to escape Earth’s gravity and enter a transfer orbit. From there, the object’s path is dictated entirely by Newton’s laws all the way to the Moon.

Science doesn’t ask why. It just calculates.
