A face capable of changing completely between one frame and the next.

A decade earlier, the world had fallen in love with her as the impossibly young Empress Sissi. Then came Paris, Visconti, Welles and Alain Delon. The porcelain princess had already begun dismantling her own fairy tale.

By 1968, she and Delon had been apart for five years. She had married Harry Meyen, become a mother to David and stepped away from the screen for a while.
When La Piscine came along, Delon wanted her opposite him. She came back. And Bonnotte found this Romy.

Sometimes immaculate, almost aristocratic. Sometimes freckled and wet-haired, apparently unaware of the camera. And in one frame, laughing, with little David in her arms.

That photograph matters.

Because hindsight can be cruel with Romy Schneider. We know too much about what came later, and it becomes almost impossible to look at her without searching her face for the sadness that would eventually become part of her myth.

But in Saint-Tropez in 1968, it isn’t there yet. There is sunlight. There is a swimming pool. There is her son. There is a woman about to turn thirty, and about to begin the second act of her career, the better one.

Through the 1970s, mostly in France, Romy became something richer and far more interesting than the princess Europe had first adored. The beauty remained, obviously. But now there was weight behind it. Vulnerability without fragility. An emotional honesty that made even her silences feel like dialogue.

Life would ask far too much of her. David died in 1981, at fourteen. Ten months later, Romy was gone too. She was 43.

Today she would have turned 88.

Let’s leave her there, by the pool, in the late sun of 1968. Before anyone had to be brave. 🖤
