May be an image of poster and text that says 'FEASTS AND FUNCTIONS The origins of Smailholm's outer hall lay i the public obligations of Squire Pringle to his estate tenants, who lived the area around the tower. public required more accessible space; hence hall separate from fromth the tower house Here the laird met is tenants regularly, collected rents and adjudicated disputes. The outer hall also served for larger entertaining, such as wedding feasts, which explains the presence the kitchen across the courtyard service the more lavish banquets. Excavations showed that the Pringles ate lot of beef and mutton, along with fowl and sea fish.'.

What a lovely surprise to meet the daughter and her family of George Blair. George built the stunning model of Smailholm Tower that is one of the highlights of the archeological display at Smailholm Tower. George is 89. He worked for Historic Scotland from 1985 to 1991 (approx). Thank you, George. You did a great job. Sending you best wishes from Walter Scott’s ‘shattered tower’. #smailholmtower #historicscotland #visitkelso #scotlandstartshere #sirwalterscott
