An enclosure can keep an animal safe, but it doesn’t replace the need for natural experiences.

During my SIWES at Green Fingers Wildlife Conservation Initiative, one of my daily routines was taking the African spurred tortoises out onto the lawn to graze.

They spent most of their time in their enclosure, so this was their opportunity to move around, stretch their legs, graze freely, explore their surroundings, and spend some time in the sunlight.

After they had spent enough time outside, I would take them back into their enclosure.

It may have looked like a simple routine, but it taught me something important about caring for wildlife in captivity:

Good sanctuary care is not just about providing food and shelter. It is also about creating opportunities for animals to exhibit natural behaviours.
