“Bloody Wildlifers.” 🐾

What sounded like a nickname in 200 level became an identity I understood by 400 level.

Being a Wildlifer goes far beyond loving animals. We are trained to be brave, observant, disciplined, adaptable and resilient—through forest patrols, wildlife management, conservation, immobilisation and field experiences.

Wildlife plays a vital role in our ecosystems, and as many species face growing threats, Wildlifers have a role to play in protecting them and their habitats.

So, if you’ve been wondering who’s behind all the wildlife content…

I’m Chisom Immaculata.
Wildlife & Ecotourism Management student.

Future conservationist.
Proudly, a BLOODY WILDLIFER.

DECEMBER TRAVEL PLANS? YOUR FLIGHT SHOULD ALREADY BE ON YOUR TO-DO LIST!

Happy New Month!

November is here, and the festive season is getting closer!

If you're planning to travel this December, whether within Nigeria or internationally, here's one piece of advice: Don't wait until December to book your flight.

Let me tell you why.

I recently had a client scheduled to travel in December, but guess what? We got his flight booked as early as October!

Why so early?

Because festive-season travel can get really busy. More people are travelling, available seats on preferred flights can become limited, and ticket prices may increase as demand rises.

Imagine waiting until one or two weeks before your travel date, only to discover that your preferred flight is unavailable or the remaining options are more expensive than you expected.

You don't want that stress!

I can assist with checking flight options, comparing fares and securing a suitable ticket. The earlier you plan, the more room you have to make informed travel decisions.

And if you need help with your travel arrangements, I'm available to assist with:

• Local & International Flight Bookings
• Hotel Reservations Worldwide
• Travel Planning & Coordination

Whether you're travelling home for Christmas, visiting loved ones, going on vacation or travelling for business, let's get your plans sorted!

Don't wait for the festive rush. Book ahead and travel with ease.

Send me a DM to get started. Let's plan your next trip!

Happy New Month! ❤️

I was the first Travel Independent trainee to secure a client and successfully book an international flight!

Now, that's a milestone I am genuinely excited to share.

After months of training, developmental tasks and practical activities, having the opportunity to put everything into practice with an actual client made the experience even more rewarding.

It is one thing to learn how an industry works; it is another to take on a client's request and successfully deliver.

I am grateful to Travel Independent and TMD for the platform, guidance and opportunity to take this step.

Beyond this milestone, I am open to job opportunities and collaborations involving flight bookings, ticketing, hotel reservations and travel coordination.

Here's to more successful bookings, new experiences and continued growth in the travel industry!

I landed my first international flight booking client, and I hadn't even advertised my services!

Sometimes, you learn something new without knowing how soon you'll get the opportunity to put it into practice.

That was exactly what happened when I joined the Travel Independent training through its collaboration with the Tourism and Hospitality, Mentorship for Development Foundation (TMD FOUNDATION) , I was interested in learning more about the travel business, particularly flight & hotel reservations, ticketing, and the practical skills needed to operate in the industry.

During the training, we also learned about finding clients and how the people already within our networks could become potential clients. Interestingly, I hadn't started promoting my services or actively reaching out to anyone.

Then, an opportunity came up within my network.

Someone reached out to me needing assistance with an international round-trip flight booking, and I was able to step in and handle the process.

The payment was made, the booking was completed, and I had officially handled my first international flight booking client independently!

What made this experience particularly exciting was that I hadn't even started advertising my services.

I was acquiring practical skills, and preparing myself for opportunities without knowing when they would come.

Now Imagine it came when I was unskilled to handle it.

I would have lost a major opportunity. And I say this to anyone hoping to start anything, you don't always have to advertise everywhere before your skills can attract an opportunity.

Learn that skill because an opportunity may come through the connections you already have.

Don't be caught unprepared !

What matters is having something valuable to offer when that opportunity presents itself.

Now, I'm available to assist with:

• Local and international flight bookings
• Travel planning and itinerary assistance
• Flight Reservation
• Hotel reservations

If you're planning a trip or need help arranging your travel, send me a message.

I'll be happy to discuss your requirements and help you explore suitable options at affordable service charges.

What if your next source of income came from an industry you're interested in but have never considered working in?

For many people, getting into the travel business sounds expensive.

The idea of owning a travel agency, obtaining the necessary requirements, and figuring out how everything works can feel like a lot to take on.

But what if there was another way to get started?

A few months ago, an opportunity like this came through the @officialtmdfoundation in collaboration with Travel Independent.

The initiative provided training for interested students, graduates, and young professionals looking to explore the travel and tourism industry and learn how to build an independent travel business.

I was interested, so I took the opportunity.

Through the training, I gained practical exposure to the business side of travel, including flight bookings and reservations, ticketing, customer relations, digital skills, publicity, and the processes involved in providing travel services.

One thing that stood out to me was the possibility of starting independently without necessarily owning a physical travel agency.

For anyone interested in the industry but unsure how to navigate the cost and requirements of establishing a traditional agency, learning how independent travel services operate can be a valuable starting point.

And it didn't end with the first training.

We had another session around World Tourism Day, and the learning has continued through regular activities within the community. From practising customer communication to improving our visibility and learning how to attract potential clients, these activities encourage us to move beyond acquiring knowledge and begin applying it.

This is what makes the opportunity particularly valuable to me. It is not simply about learning how to book a flight; it is about understanding the business behind the service, developing practical skills, and exploring how those skills can create income opportunities.

I interned at the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN)!

Specifically, at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos during my 400lv SIwes and it was an experience that broadened my perspective on Wildlife and Ecotourism Management.

When people hear about my field of study, wildlife and conservation are often the first things that come to mind. While those are important parts of my journey, my experience at FAAN introduced me to another side of the profession: aviation, airport operations, environmental management, and tourism.

During my internship, I was attached to different units under the Environmental Services Department, beginning with the Facility Unit, where I gained insight into facility management and the systems that support airport operations.

I was subsequently rotated to the Wildlife Hazard Unit, where I learned about managing wildlife-related risks within an aviation environment, and the Grassland Unit, which exposed me to another dimension of environmental management at the airport.

My experience extended beyond these units. I had the opportunity to visit the cargo area, Hajj terminal, FAAN headquarters office , and the FAAN Training School(where we underwent registration, orientation, and training).

One thing that particularly stood out to me was the level of security and coordination required to keep an international airport running safely. It gave me a greater appreciation for the people, systems, and processes working behind the scenes every day.

Wildlife and Ecotourism Management is broader than many people realize. It can open doors to different sectors, including aviation, environmental services, tourism, and beyond.

I am grateful for the opportunity to have gained this exposure at FAAN, and I look forward to exploring the many possibilities within my field.

There's more to my journey than wildlife, and I'm excited to share more of it.

It is one thing to be given an opportunity.

It is another to become someone people can confidently recommend for the next one.

I have come to realize that confidence is built over time.

Through the responsibilities we take seriously, the promises we keep, the way we handle challenges, and if people can count on us to follow through.

But trust is only part of the equation.

People also need solutions.

They need someone who can think through a problem, make their work easier, bring ideas to life, or help move something forward.

Being trusted with a responsibility matters. But what you do with that responsibility matters just as much.

And when people consistently experience both dependability and value in their dealings with you.

The relationship begins to go beyond a single task or opportunity.

They return. They recommend you. They trust you with more.

That is how something lasting begins to take shape.

It is also why these words in my LinkedIn headline mean more to me than just a description of what I do.

Trust. Solutions. Long-term impact.

Trust is the confidence people place in you.

Solutions are what you bring to the room.

Long-term impact is what becomes possible when that trust and value are sustained over time.

These ideas matter across professions, industries, and stages of a career.

You don't have to wait until you have a big title or years of experience before you begin building that kind of reputation.

Every responsibility is an opportunity to practise it.

These words reflect not just how I present myself, but how I work, the opportunities I take on, and the value I leave behind.

The goal is not simply to get your foot in the door.

It is to become someone whose contribution makes people glad they opened it.

Why do SIWES students have to leave the Wildlife Sanctuary to teach in a school?

I remember looking at the Nature School timetable and realizing just how much movement was involved.

You could be at the Sanctuary carrying out your normal duties, and by 10 a.m., it was time to head to a classroom.

Not just one classroom either.

There were different classes across Pre-Nursery, Nursery, and Year 1 to Year 6 (Amber, Sapphire, Ruby, Topaz,)

You teach, interact with the students, answer their questions, make sure they understand, and then you return to the Sanctuary to continue with your other responsibilities.

At first, you might wonder what all of this has to do with being a Wildlife and Ecotourism Management student.

Quite a lot, actually.

Wildlife work is not just about being able to identify an animal, understand its behaviour or care for it.

There will be moments when we have to take that knowledge outside the Sanctuary and communicate it to people.

• It could be a school.
• It could be a local community.
• It could be a wildlife extension programme
• A conservation outreach.

And when that moment comes, knowing what to say is only half of the job.

Being able to stand before people and actually say it clearly matters too.

For some of us, speaking in front of a class may be the first time we are deliberately put in that position.

But in Greenfingers Wildlife Sanctuary, Nature School gives us that practice.

Every class becomes an opportunity to express an idea, engage an audience, respond to questions and become more confident with our voices.

So, while we think we are leaving the wildlife Sanctuary to teach children, we are also quietly being prepared for a very important part of our future work.

"Communicating wildlife to people."

I didn’t just work with animals; I also supervised an exam during my SIWES at Greenfingers Wildlife Sanctuary.

Another part of my experience was Nature School, a subject taught at Refiner’s School from pre-nursery to secondary level, introducing students to wildlife, ecosystems, conservation, and nature.

My first activity with Miss Chioma, the Nature School teacher, was assisting with an examination.

And interestingly, it wasn’t a pen-and-paper exam. The students took it digitally in the ICT lab, including identifying mammals they had learned about during the term.

Getting to participate in wildlife education at such an early level was another meaningful part of my SIWES.

The future of conservation begins with what a child is taught to appreciate today.

My second attempt at handling a snake was more scary than the first.

The first time as a SIwes Student at the Greenfingers Wildlife Sanctuary, the snake was brought out of its enclosure and handed to me simply to get a feel for handling it.

This time, I was asked to pick it up myself.

And honestly, I was scared.

I knew that where I picked it up mattered. I didn’t want to grab it by the head, and I definitely didn’t want to hold it by the tail.

So I kept looking for that particular section where I could confidently place my hand.

There was a lot of hesitation before I finally did it.

Then I picked it up.

And just like that, the fear started giving way to fascination.

I brought it out and found myself looking at it differently.

“Wait… so this is what you actually look like up close?” 😂

We even started trying to give it a name because, apparently, I like naming things.

But beyond the excitement, this was another practical lesson for me as a Wildlife and Ecotourism Management student.

The more I learn, the more I realize that confidence in wildlife work isn't about having no fear.

It's about learning how to handle that fear responsibly.

The first time I lifted an African spurred tortoise, it peed on me.

My first reaction was basically, one of surprise.

I didn't understand that reaction .

But it didn't stop there.

During my SIWES at Greenfingers Wildlife Sanctuary, I noticed something interesting whenever the tortoises were lifted up by anyone especially during tours when visitors would pick them up for interaction .

Sometimes, after being handled for a while, they would urinate.

At first, it was easy to laugh about it. After all, getting peed on by a tortoise isn't exactly the wildlife experience you imagine when you visit the sanctuary.

But I curious to know why this animal actually exhibit such behavior.

I made a research and I found out why it happens.

The African spurred tortoises can store considerable amounts of urine in their bladder.

Handling, restraint, or disturbance can cause them to release it, particularly when they are experiencing stress or fear.

So while someone might describe the tortoise as being “excited,” that isn't necessarily what the behavior means.

That little experience became one of those practical lessons my SIWES gave me: My SIwes wasn't only about identifying species, feeding animals, or taking beautiful pictures with them.
.
• I noticed a repeated behavior..
• I became curious ,asking why?
• I learnt the lesson with a wet shirt.

Working with wildlife has a funny way of turning ordinary moments into lessons in animal behavior.
